The carnival is held the last weekend of the July school holidays. As usual there is a lot to do before we go to Narrogin and we are eager to get started.
The competition is open to Yr 4 – Yr 10 players and they will get to play a round robin of games over the weekend.
Competition teams are:
- Years 4,5 & 6
- Years 7/8
- Years 9/10 (mixed)
It’s a fantastic weekend away – for kids and parents.

You need to do this regardless of if you entered an EOI or not as these only allowed us to determine likely players and accordingly team numbers and accommodation requirements.
Costs cover player registration, (over 10 years of age) , shelter during the carnival along with breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday and covers accommodation on Friday and Saturday night.
Registration is open for a limited time – please register ASAP if you want to be guaranteed a place.
Some players may be asked to move age groups (i.e. 7/8 players in 9/10) to accommodate playing numbers and we also may consider entering mixed teams (9/10’s is all mixed).
Registrations received for entries after the 13th player in a team will not be guaranteed a place.
Bringing a Friend – Players from other Clubs
In previous years we have also enjoyed the company of players from other clubs. If your child would like to bring along a friend who is an experienced hockey player to participate in the Carnival, they are more than welcome.
What do you need to know about the Narrogin Carnival Weekend?
The Narrogin Carnival is held at the Football Oval, Racecourse & Recreation Centre in Clayton Street Narrogin (click here for map of the venue).
It is played over 2 days – Saturday and Sunday, and each team will play somewhere between 6 – 9 games over the weekend.
Mods-OGM will organise accommodation and most of your food for the weekend. You will need to bring your own bedding (i.e. sleeping bag) and linen, plus dinner for Friday and Saturday nights depending on where you stay.
Your registration above includes hot breakfasts, lunches and as many hot drinks as you need for all day Saturday and Sunday. Children under 10 are free.
It will be cold and probably wet over the weekend so wet weather and warm clothing will be required.
We have hired the Narrogin Football Clubrooms which are adjacent to the Hockey Grounds – this provides us with a far greater capacity to support our large numbers over the weekend.
Accommodation
We stay at various venues in Narrogin to accommodate our vast numbers:
- Dryandra
- Residential college gyms
We try to keep the teams together as much as possible so that your child can hang out with their team mates.
You are not obliged to stay with the team and are welcome to organise your own accommodation. Please choose non-player NO Accommmodation. We do however need some parents to stay in the gyms for supervision, so if you haven't yet done it please consider this.
Once we finalise the numbers for the competition we will let you know where you are staying and what you need to bring with you.
Getting There
Narrogin is about a 2 ½ hour drive from Perth via Albany Hwy & Williams or Brookton & Great Southern Highway.
Most people arrive between 3 – 6 pm on the Friday. Driving in the dark can have hazards with the local wildlife. The roads out to Dryandra are dark – so preference is for first timers to leave by 3pm at the latest.
Detailed directions to each location will be provided in your accommodation email which will be sent prior to the July School Holidays.
At the Carnival
At the sports grounds we will set up our own special Mods hangout. This year we have hired the Narrogin Football Clubrooms which are adjacent to the Hockey Grounds – this will provide us with a far greater capacity to support our large numbers over the weekend.
Each year we organise breakfast, lunch, continuous coffee, tea and hot chocolate for the weekend at a nominal cost. This is a fabulous set up and we manage to keep our players and families warm, dry and fed during the day.
We do ask that you provide either some muffins, cake, slices, fruit for our morning and afternoon teas.
Code of Conduct
When Booking you will be asked if you “Agree to comply with the Code of Conduct?” which is below. Modernians has had limited issues over the years while attending Narrogin however we do ask that you remind all attendees that they are representing our club while travelling. This is both at the carnival itself and at our accommodation facilities, some of which are in environmentally sensitive areas and all have specific compliance requirements.
Players, parents, coaches and managers agree to abide by the rules of the Carnival set out by the Upper Great Southern Hockey Association.
Any player who is conducting themselves in an unsatisfactory manner, including but not limited to, being in possession of alcohol, drugs or cigarettes or using technology inappropriately will immediately be withdrawn from the competition. Parents will be notified to come and collect their child. If parents are unable to collect their child, he/she will be sent home and the cost will be met by the family of that child – this is to protect the club and the parent/volunteers during the carnival.
Parents agree to medical attention being given to children in their absence, if required. Parents will be responsible for any resulting expenses. All relevant medical information has been provided.
Players, Parents and Siblings agree to:
- Show respect to other players both from Modernians and other clubs / associations
- Show respect to parent volunteers and supervisors
- Show respect to umpires and game officials
- Play good fair hockey
- Take care of the facilities at Narrogin accommodation provided and stay within areas specified by supervisors.
- Not interfere or damage any resources at any accommodation location
- Behave appropriately at all time
Volunteers
The success of the weekend will depend on our troop of volunteers. We particularly need coaches, umpires and managers for each team over the weekend.
All parents will be required to volunteer in some capacity over the weekend. On the registration form, please indicate what you will be willing to volunteer for. The categories are:
- Coaches
- Managers
- Umpires
- Canteen
Each team will be allocated a timeslot of roughly 2 hours over the weekend during which they will need to provide the catering crew. There are other vital roles to fulfill over the weekend also.
Narrogin is an amazing weekend of sport, friendship, community and camaraderie.
It is enormous amount of fun for young and old. We hope you can join us.
Registration
Registrations are taken on a strict first-in-best-dressed basis.
Accommodation will be allocated after closure of registrations. When you register you will receive an email which confirms that your details have been received and are in our system. After closure of Registration, our team will go through a process to allocate teams and individuals to accommodation. This process is completed during the week prior to the July School Holidays.
You will receive an email with confirmation of all accommodation details immediately prior to the commencement of the holidays.
